A Beautiful Day

Hi there, I’m Jason. One of the owners at Vaca Cove! This is my blog post on what I would consider a perfect day down in the Keys.

At Vaca Cove there’s lots to do if you want and lots of ways to relax, if you don’t! Here are some of the activities my family and I recommend during your stay:

Flex your muscles at Nick’s Fitness Express with a weekly memberships and 24-hour access. Afterward, grab a post-workout coffee at Curly’s, a Marathon staple.

I love to jump in the pool at Vaca Cove to cool off after my workout. Usually, I can find my kids and wife already splashing around by the time I return from the gym.  We love to spend time by the pool, but one of my son’s favorite activities is to take a kayak trip under the Sadowski Causeway and into the Mangroves by Coco Plum.  If fishing is more your style, we love to drop a line in the water and try to catch a few jacks that like to move through the channel.

Find snorkeling supplies and more at Captain Hook’s. Just a short walk from Vaca Cove, the shop is well-equipped and ready to help you explore the crystal clear waters of Sombrero Reef—seriously, one of the best reefs in the continental US. With good visibility, the reef’s inhabitants are easy to spot! Look for huge schools of snapper, black grouper and moray eels. If you’re lucky, a sea turtle might swim by and say hello!

If you would rather stay on dry land, I love to visit  Key Colony Beach. Their nine hole golf course can easily be reached by bike or a short walk. In addition the park features tennis courts, basketball, bocce, horseshoes, swings and a playground. Afterward, snag some dinner over at the Island, a family-friendly restaurant with views of the Gulf, fish feeding, a great selection of draft beer and something on the menu for everyone.

One of my family’s favorite ways to finish our evening is with tropical-inspired cocktails on our bungalow’s private balcony as we watch the sunset. Before bed we like to pop a DVD in and watch a movie in the living room, usually a classic like Bogie and Bacall’s Key Largo. If you plan out a day like ours, get some rest—you’ll need it for another perfect day in paradise!
